The Fourfront Group helps save the Purple Emperor butterfly

On Friday 8th October 2010 thirty volunteers from Area Sq and The Fourfront Group travelled down to Alice Holt Forest in Surrey to work on activities that protect the Purple Emperor Butterfly and help it thrive in the local woodland.

The Group coppiced areas of the woodland to increase light and space in the designated areas, encouraging the growth of the Sallow to ensure a plentiful food source for the butterflies and other insects.  They also had the opportunity to visit the area of woodland we worked on last year and see its progress.

Paul Cordle, Forestry Commission Landscape Artist, who led the day, said "We are delighted the Fourfront Group has continued working with us this year.  We have a programme of continuous management for the woodland but with current resources would not able to meet this programme if it wasn’t for volunteers like the Group.  They managed to achieve a huge amount in this day and we look forward to inviting them back to see the changes next year."

Clive Lucking, Group Managing Director said "Our Group environmental programmes have grown exponentially in the last few years and this partnership with the Forestry Commission is one we are very proud of."
